COAST NEWS.

TOKOMARU BAY BUDGET

TQKOMAIIU BAY, July 25. We have been having seasonable cold weather, with occasional showers. The roads are everywhere in good winter condition and travellers are looking forward to shortly getting through to Gisborne by car again.’

The last few trips of the Araliura have been well timed and passengers have been able to get away without any uncertain waiting at the wharf. Feed is somewhat short owing to the cold lately experienced, but stock everywhere are in good condition.

There has been a big reduction of hands at the freezing works. Many of the men have left the district. Employment is very slack at present and we frequently see men with their swags up now—quite a contrast to the last few years. Dr. Ludbrook has left us and anticipates reaching England shortly to continue his studies in the hospitals in that country. Dr. Davis is back to his old practice after his twelve months’ holiday, during which he visited many lands. The local maternity home has continued to prove its usefulness, and has reached its first “century.” Nurse Stevens is justly proud of the attainment and reports that the sec ond hundred has made a good beginning. The Waiapu Hospital Board are to be congratulated upon the establishment of this much need institution .

Football has been played very keenly right through the district this season—Tologa Bay sent a team as far as Ruatorea. when they p'ayed and won a very fine and hard contested game. On their way up they played a draw with Tokomaru Bay. This game was a fine open one and showed splendid combination on both sides.

Last Saturday Tokomaru Bay played Tologa Bay and were very badly beaten (28 to 3). The Tokomaru team was quite outclassed on this occasion. Tologa Bay showed splendid combiinaation right through the team both forwards and backs. After this match a team was picked representative of the Coast from Tologa Bay to Te Araroa, to play Poverty Bay on August 13th. Hockey is also receiving attention. Our men played Ruatorea last week, at Ruatorea, and a faif.lv even game was won by Tokomaru Bay. Every- | body is looking forward to the visitj ing ladies’ team from Gisborne next { week. Ruatorea has volunteered transport for the Gisborne and Toko- ! maru Bay teams to play a,, match on ! their ground. This has been aooept!ed and 1 all arrangements are made | both' locally and at Ruatorea for | carrying this out. A combined team, ; Tologa and Tokomaru Bay, is being | selected to play Gisborne at Toko-. ! maru Bay during the tour. ; The rainfall for June, 1921, was T I inches 46 points, as against 9 inches j 56 points for the same month last year.—Special. ,
