LEWIS GUN COMPANY.
CLAIM .AGAINST HOME GOVERNMENT. DISPUTED EXCESS PROFITS TAX. LONDON. July 25. Tlie King's Bench division is hearing a claim by the owners of the Lewis gun for a return of three million taken as excess profits tax. They allege the price they quoted to the Government, £IOO, was specially low because the Government authorities pointed out that the Lewjs Company was Belgian, and therefore not liable for British taxation. The Crown denies that any such promise was made, adding that it had no official power to grant anyone dispensation from British taxation.
Lewis, the inventor, a retired colonel in the United States Army, gave evidence that the War Office ordered two guns in 1913, and five in August, 1914. When 4,000 Lewis guns were lost in March, 1918, the Birmingham Small Arms Company supplied 8,000 within a fortnight. Altogether £13,000.000 was paid for the Lewis guns.—A. tyad N.Z. C.A.
