WANGANUI WRANGLE.
SEVERAL COUNCILLORS RESIGN.
STRIKING DEVELOP-MENTS
EXPECTED
WANGANUI, July 27. "A. special meeting of the Borough Council concluded sensationally just before midnight. At the last , municipal election' a Citizens’ ‘‘ticket,” impliedly pledged to prevent the installation of a big steam plant as a stand-by at the tramway powerhouse, was elected and obtained a majority on the Council. A few meetings ago it was decided to erect a small portion of the plant and sell the remainder in order to obtainfunds with which to reticulate the town. Since then three members of the Citizens’ “ticket” became supporters of the big scheme, and, by their change of. front, the opponents of the Citizens’ “ticket” gained a majority. To-night a motion' rescinding the resolution to instal a. small portion was carried in favor of one to put in the whole plant, to cost over £BO,OOO. • The • remaining members of the Citizens’ “ticket” handed in their resignations, intimating tlpit they would seek re-elec-tion. Some striking developments are expected.—P.A.
