CUSTOMS DUTY PROBLEM.
MR ISITT AGAIN TACKLES THE MINISTER,
DUTY LEVIED ON INVOICE COST ONLY.
WELLINGTON.. July 20. Tho assessment of Customs duty in these days of prices which vary from week to week, was mentioned In the House Mo-day by Mr Isitt. He asked the Minister of Customs (Sir Win. Herries) whether he was aware that his department was still persisting in the practice of levying duty not on the actual purchase price but on the present, day values of commodities landed in this country. He contended that this was an addition to the cost of goods which the people ought not to be called'upon to bear. Sir Win. Herries said that his information was that his department levied duty on the invoice cost at the time of shipment. The honorable member had been informed to this effect.
Mr Isitt; said that his question had to do with a new case. The Minister said that the lion, member would have his remedy if he could prove'that duty had been charged at more than the invoiced cost under the rules as prescribed for the guidance of Customs officers. —Special to Times.
