A semi-official apologia for acceptance of the coal terms declares that no other decision was possible after Marshal Foch liad been Summoned. On one band there was tlie invasion into the heart of Germany, with incalculable political consequences, and on the other a reduction of 8 per cent, on the coal supply of Germany. Germany lias requested the requisite cargo space for the transport of a hundred thousand milcli cows, placed at the disposal of the German Red Cross by the Chicago Cattle Gbmpany to alleviate distress among German children, and it is declared that Germany is not in a position to find the necessary cargo space. A correspondent reports that at the closing of the conference, M. de la Croiz announced that discussions regarding reparations would be continued by a committee of two representatives of the Great Powers and Germany meeting at Geneva in a few weeks’ time.—Reuter.
FRENCH PREMIER’S OPINION
ALLIES PRESENT UNITED FRONT TO GERMANY.
PARIS, July 18. M. Millerand, in ail interview, stated that discussions among the Allies were often difficult and lively, but the Allies were able to show Germany a united front. M. Millerand concluded by warmly acknowledging Mr. Lloyd-George’s help.— A. and N.Z.C.A.
BRITISH ORDERS NOT OBEYED. GERMANS ON RHINE STILT, RETAIN ARMS,. (Received July 19, 11.40 p.m.) BERLIN, July 19. Though the British commander on the Rhine ordered all arms in private possession in the occupied area must be given up by July 20, General Yon der Goltz announces that arms will not be given up because to do so would mean certain ruin to the Fatherland. He urges that- armed discharged soldiers should be employed on farms in order to protect landowners against the Spartacists.—A. and N.Z.C.A.
