BOXING.

SUGGESTED “BIG" CONTEST FOR

GISBORNE

PLEA THAT CL ABB Y SHOULD BE MATCHED WITH LLOYD.

(By “Old ’Un.”) In view of the fact that Les Gleeson failed to extend Jimmy Clabby it would lie a very popular move if the Boxing Association, at its meeting to-night, were to negotiate for a match between Lloyd and Clabby. When these fine boxers met at Auckland some weeks back Lloyd had to give up on account of an injury to his leg.. Up till that stage of the contest "he had done remarkably well and many of the onlookers considered that lie. was leading cm points. Naturally a verdict for Clabby in such circumstances was not satisfactory- to Lloyd or Clabby. To the best of “Old ’tin’s” belief a return contest between the pair would constitute the best- match it would be possible for any association to arrange this season. And there is no reason why this contest should not be held in Gisborne! It is true that the association would require to offer a big purse to secure the contest. But if Hastings and Wanganui can put up £SOO purses-Gisborne can surely offer a sufficiently large stake to attract Clabby and'Lloyd. That the public of this district would have- no hesitation in providing a bier “house” for such a notable encounter may bo gathered from the fact that the gross receipts for the Clablyv-Gleeson match if “Old ’Un” is not misinformed — ran into over £550. It is understood that the local association lias given an undertaking to re-match Jack Heenoy and Gleeson next month. match between Clabby and Lloyd* would, however, prove very appetising to local lovers of boxing for October. Clabby, as “Old Un” understands, would be delighted to meet Lloyd in Gisborne in that month it the'match could be arranged. “Old Un” has no doubt at all oil the point that the local association would not he out of pocket over the transaction. Tn addition it would earn, a great name for itself for enterprise.
