FOOTBALL.

RUGBY GAMES

There was a fairly large attendance at Childers Road Reserve on Saturday afternoon, when the weather for football was ideal 'though at times a bit "nippy” for the spectators. In the senior grade Old Boys-Y.M.P. defeated High School by 17 points to 3, whilst United accounted for Manga-papa-lluia by five points to 3. Details of the play appear below. OLD BOYS-Y.M.P. (17) Y. HIGH SCHOOL (3).

Old Boys-Y.M.P. kicked off from the western end and soon had the School boys defending. Devery broke away but a good tackle brought him down within a few yards of the line. The School forwards put in a nice dribbling rush and took play back into neutral territory, the ball eventually going out at half-way. __ Old Boys-Y.M.P. returned to the attack and the scholars had a busy time defending their line. Just inside the School twenty-five Old Boys-Y.M.P. were awarded a free kick and Leckie sent the ball over the bar. Old BoysY.M.P. 3; High School nil. Old BoysY.M.P. continued to attack and a passing movement in which Leckie and Scott were prominent saw the latter forced out in the corner. The Collegians cleared their line and for a.time play remained in neutral territory, but Old Boys-Y.M.P. again assumed the offensive. Devery picked up in the loose and passed to Hundleby who gained ground by a good dodgy run but when tackled lost the ball. A good forward rush in which Carson and Maude were conspicuous transferred the scene of play to Old Boys-Y.M.P. twenty-five. The ball was gradually worked back to half-way, where H. Lauglands secured and put in a good run to the twentyfive, where his pass went astray. A few moments later Keiha initiated a passing rush, sending the leather on to Jones to Leckie, who was brought down about ten yards from the line. Pere got tire School out of trouble by a good individual effort, in wlricb he put in a splendid run and then found the line beyond half-way with a beautiful kick. Another passing rush by Old BoysY.M.P. saw them succeed in getting over, Frank Scott scoring a try 'after receiving a pass close to the line from Devery. Scott's kick at goal was unsuccessful. Old Bovs-Y.M.P. 6; High School nil.

The second half opened with the School boys on the attaeje., , From a scrum at half-way Hampton passed to Mouat to Pere, and the movement gained considerable ground. 1 Old BoysY.M.P. then assumed the offensive and rushed the ball dawn the field, but a clever defensive work by Mouat got the Collegians out of trouble. A neat passing movement by Hampton. Mount, Bull and Pere again placed the School on the offensive, but a sound defence kept them from breaking through. Old Boys-Y.M.P. came away with a passing rush, Devery to' McDonald, to Frank Scott, the .latter being forced' out of bounds a few yards from the High School line. Securing from the lineout Devery dived over and scored. The kick at goal was unsuccessful. Old BoysY.M.P. 9; High School nil. Ah excellent piece of play by IV. Lauglands led to a further try for Old Boys-Y.M.P. Picking up in his own twenty-five, Lauglands put in a beautiful run in which he must have gained fully fifty yards. Finding himself crowded on the touch line, lie centred and H. Langlands, picking up cleverly, streaked over the liite' Hundleby failed to convert. Old Boys-Y.M.P. U; High School nil. The School brightened up a little and gave'occasional glimpses of their true form. Mouat secured at half-way, and cutting in beautifully sent the leather on to Pere to Te Arawa, whose pass to Hansen was intercepted by H. Langlands, who with Frank Scott carried the ball to the School twenty-five. Old Boys-Y.M.P. let loose a series of attacks on the School line. A passing rush by McDonald. Langlands and P. Winter saw the latter cap the movement with a try. Hunclleby’s kick at goal was unsuccessful. Old Boys-Y.M.P. 17: High School nil. In play again the School opened up with some bright passing rushes in which Mouat, Te Arawa and Hansen were prominent. One of these rushes carried the leather to within a few yards of the opposition line, where Carson kicked too hard and Old Bovs-Y.M.P. were enabled to force. High School were • awarded a f ree kick just outside their opponents’ ttvenlyfivp and Mouat kicked a fine goal from a difficult, angle. Old Boys-Y.M.P. 17: High- School 3. These were the final scores. -Mr J. H. Reidy controlled the game. UNITED (5) V. MANGAPAPAHUIA (3).

The game was an evenly contested one throughout, but may be described as more strenuous than brilliant. Those cohesive movements and bright sparkling rushes which delight the heart of the Rugby enthusiast were conspicuous by their absence and at times the match resolved itself into a scramble. A passing rush by the United backs saw McGerty cross over in a handy position, the try being converted by Harris. Just before half-time Mangapapa made a determined onslaught on their opponents' citadel. The ball went over the line and the Mangapapa wing three-quarter set sail after it, but being illegally interfered with by a United player, the. referee promptly and correctly awarded Mangapapa an obstruction try. The kick at goal was unsuccessful. United 5; Mangapapa-Hnia 3. In the second half play travelled up and down the field, first one side and then the other gaining the advantage. Despite numerous attacks and counterattacks neither side succeeded in crossing the ’ other’s line, which speaks volumes for the defensive powers of both sides. Full time arrived with the scores unaltered. United thus winning by the narrow margin of two points — a true reflex of the state of the game. Mr W. R. Burge was referee.

j - JUNIOR MATCHES. ; Possible Reps, and Probable Reps played a draw, tlie scores being 14 all Mr Poswillo was referee.

i Kaiti City (third grade) defeated Y.M.P. (third grade) by IS points to 5. Mr J. Corbett was referee.
