THE TURF.

(By “Sunstar.”) During the week “Sunstar” paid a visit to W. Olive’s training quarters, and was afforded every opportunity to*see the horses this painstaking trainer has under his care. The writer particularly noted the tidy appearance of the yards and loose boxes which are a credit to the management. Olive has seven hor-ses in work, and is just breaking in a nice Multifid mare out of Dawdles, therefore a full sister to the good performer Retard. He has two nice two-year-okls, one by Hymettius from Wood Crest, and the other by Diabolo from Yankey Mary. Both these youngsters show quality, and “Sunstar” likes "the Diabolo colt very much.

_ The next two I saw are two full sisters, both by Gazeley from Lady Reay—one a four-year-old and the other a three-year-old. This pair are half-siters to that good performer Iney, and, if appearances count, they should more than pay their way. . In the next box was Ohoreka, the Australian bred horse by Posiedon, and he looks in first-class form. A brown mare by Finland from Cantata is a very nice mare, and bred the way she is should gallop with the best. The last one of the active brigade shown me was the Gazeley gelding Broadway, who is now being schooled over the small fences, and he has taken to the game like a duck to water. All the horses genial “Bill” has under his care reflect great credit on him, and no one would begrudge this hard-working trainer a turn of good luck. Tf his horses don’t win it is not for the want of attention. Before leaving “Sunstar” had a look at the thoroughbred sire Nightwatch, also in charge of Olive, and for a nicer bit of horseflesh one would need to go a long way before seeing better. His condition is firstclass, and this horse having such great blood in his veins is sure to leave great stock. The well-known brood mare Kowerewere has a colt foal by Elysian. This youngster is a full brother to Koesian. The mare visits Heather Mixture this season. It is more than likelv that H. Hickey will make his home in Gisborne. The Marton race meeting takes place to-day, and Kauri King is greatly fancied for the big handicap. Last year Sleight of Hand, after winning the Grand National Hurdles won this _ event, so Kauri King might do likewise.
