PROCURED LIQUOR.

BEER FOR PROHIBITED PERSONS.

SHARP PENALTLY IMPOSED.

A charge of procuring liquor for three prohibited persons was preferred against Tim O’Keefe, of Muriwai at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday —before Mr W. A. Barton. The prohibited persons were Janies Kennedy, Alexander Smith and Elizabeth Smith and the offence alleged was committed on the 29th of June. Mr Burnard appeared for the defendant and pleaded not guilty on his behalf. , , , ~ Sergeant Clarkson stated that _ the defendant took liquor to Smith s house, where it was consumed. ft was known by the defendant that the persons referred to were prohibited. Alex Smith, of Gisborne, stated that on June 29 he was residing in Carnarvon Street. Both witness and his wife were prohibited. On the Saturday referred to O’Keefe came to his house in the evening and brought two bottles of beer with him. lhe liquor was drunk by witness, lus wite, the man Kennedy and the defendant. O’Keefe knew that witness and his wife were prohibited. They were later charged with procuring liquor on that dav and were convicted. Replying” to Mr Burnard witness stated that he could not say whether he asked defendant to bring liquor. Mr Burnard: Why are you so keen to got O’Keefe into this? Witness: That is .my business. Mr Burnard: So you admit you want to get him convicted. James Kennedy, laborer, stated that he could not sav whether the defendant was aware that the witness was under a prohibition older. On the Saturday night in question he was in companv with the defendant and the previous witness and his wile. Air Burnard urged that the act which was committed was a casual ° n Sr Barton said that the defendant knew that Smith was prohibited.
