——— ——•— ■ ■ ■ HARD FIGHTING WEST OF - LENS. • SLIGHT TEMPORARY ENEMY GAIN. HUNS REPORT SURPRISE ATTACK ON DIXMUDE. Gibe High Commissioner reports:—• LONDON, July 2, 11.20 p.m. British official: As the result of hard fighting westward of Lens last night and to-day our advanced posts were driven back a short distance. Admiralty—Per Wireless Press. Wireless: German official: Our shock troops made a surprise attack northward of Dixmude and captured many Belgians. The English attacked westward of Lens and penetrated a few points, hut were thrown out. French attacks on trenches lost southward of La Dovelle farm failed.
SUCCESSFUL BRITISH RAID
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association and Reuters. (Received July 3, 6.30 p.m.) ; LONDON, July 3. General Sir Douglas Haig reports: —We successfully raided eastward of Hargecourt. Enemy raiders reached our trenches eastward of Loos but were driven out.
TRENCHES RECAPTURED
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, and Reuters. (Received July 3. 8.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 3. A French communique says:— There lias been most active reciprocal artillerying in the Cerny-Ailles sector. "We counter-attacked on both sides of Aides Passy and recaptured trenches they captured yesterday, inflicting heavy losses.
