ROUMANIAN BETRAYAL.
GENERAL’S BUNGLE, OR WORSE. WHEN MACKENSEN WAS LICKED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received Feb. 12, 9.45 p.m.) PARIS. Feb. 12. The Libre Parole says the Roumanian General Socecu was condemned by a court-martial at Jassy to five years’ penal servitude and degradation for betraying the Roumanian army under his command on December 1. Executing a plan by General Berthelot, head of the French mission in Southern Roumania, the army made a vigorous offensive on the river Argehu againslf German and Bulgarian troops who had crossed, the Danube and were advancing on Bucharest. The enemy .were thrown back in disorder a dozen miles, and General Soseen’s army turned the enemy’s left, cutting them completely from General Falkenhayn’s army. General Berthelot wirelessed to Paris announcing the success, and adding that he intended to drive General Maekensen over the Danube, but General Socecu. instead of continuing the pursuit, remained inactive, and when ordered to advance commanded his army to retreat. Thus Maekensen was saved.
