Mr. Austen Chamberlain's national service scheme will come into operation almost immediately. It is semi-officially stated that the details will follow closely the lines already cabled. Mon volunteers only will 'be taken at present. _ They are wanted principally for munitions, coal mines, shipbuilding, transport and agrculture. Standard rates will be paid. The age limits are from IS, to 60 years. The men will go wherever required.

Lord Rhondda (President of iho Local Government Board), in a speech at Newport, said be considered theGovernment justified in conscripting the entire wealth and property as well as the manhood of the country. This was not necessary at present, but was only avertable by voluntary contributions to loans.
