THE- WHEAT MARKETS

(United Press Association—Copyright) (Received Feb. 7. 10.10 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 7. Wheat is firm and dear owing to Continental inquiries. Australian—duo March shipment—sold at 70s.

Wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom totals 1.765,000 quarters, and for the Continent 3,040,000 quarters. Atlantic shipments absorb 956,000, and Pacific 2000 quarters. The total for Europe is 1,295,000 quarters, Argentine 74,000 quarters.

The wool sales closed at top rates. There was sold for the Home market 96,000 hales, for the Continent 15,000 bales, and for the United States 2000 bales. There was Held over 5000 bales.

As compared with December, best scoured merinos advanced 2d, medium and faulty 2d to 3d, choicest greasy about 5 per cent, medium and common 74 to 10 per cent. Best crossbreds advanced a penny, common 10 per cent. Slipes were in keenest demand at 2d to 3d advance. Crossbred lambs 2d, merinos 10 per cent. The most remarkable feature was the absence of excitement during the boom, which was almost dangerous. Prices have been paid in the fullest confidence, and this is probably due to consumers being full of orders and enjoying good margins of profit. It is becoming increasingly evident that the consumption of wool here is proceeding on an unparalleled rate.

THE SYDNEY SALES. (United Press Association—Copyright) (Received. Feb. 7, 10.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 7. Though the embargo on shipment to America and Italy has somewhat restricted business, the range of wool prices is fully equal to the ibighest of tile season. Bradford and Japan, are Ibuying freely. Greasy crossbred touched 21Jd and scoured* 28|d.

AGENTS’ REPORTS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., have received the following cable from their London office re wool: ‘ ‘Sales closed generally firmer than last cable, inferior scoured merino, greasy crossbred, lambs, 5 per cent, higher.”
