WAIPIRO BAY. MAGISTRATE’S COURT SITTINGS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIPIRO BAY, Feb. 3. The usual quarterly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held before Mr It. S. Flora nee, S.M., on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last, the Court being fully occupied on all three days,. The solicitors on circuit were Messrs. J. R. ..Kirk, H. Hei, Graham, and Mead. Thirty-seven plaint cases and twenty-three judgment orders were nude. Mati Potai sued T. Hammond for the recovery or value of a horse which was alleged to have been lent some three years ago. After hearing evidence as to the value of the horse> judgment was given for plaintiff, with costs amounting to £ll 4sMr Kirk appeared for Potai. whilst Mr J. J. Mead represented' the defendant.

A claim for damages, amounting to £SO, was made by Piripi Waipapa (Mr Kirk) 1 for alleged l defamation of character, Eruera Tokara (Mr Hei) being alleged to have made statements m public concerning the plaintiff. At the conclusion of the hearing of the evidence an adjournment was made in order to allow of a private settlement, and such was eventually arrived at by defendant agreeing to £lO being paid into Court. For failing to bury a dead beast a defendant was fined £1 and costs amounting to £7, which included the cost of burying the carcase. A Waipiro Native was fined 8s and oasts for failing to send a child to school. , For aiding tlio committing of an offence, to wit the unlawfully supplying of liquor to a Nativo ; a defendant was fined £lO and costs. A similar case to' the foregoing was adjourned to allow of legal argument at Gisborne. Two Natives, for furiously riding horses at Tuparoa, were each fined £1 and costs. For alleged theft a Native from Hiruharama wag fined £-> and costs, whilst four other offonopi s for aiding and abetting were likewise fined. Two Natives wero charged witli breaking and entering with intentions of committing a crime but later the charge was to one of being illegally on premises at night. Both defendants were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called, upon. Constable C. Snow* represented the police throughout the sitting. . , , t, , Mr Florance journeyed on to Port Awamii’ on Saturday evening where he held “ft sitting of the Court on Monday.
