THE BROKEN HILL STRIKERS. SYDNEY, Feb. 4. A meeting of the Labor Council attempted to debate a motion endorsing the action of the Broken Hill strikers. The speakers were interrupted with hooting, and the meeting adjourned in disorder. The Liquor Trades Union has amalgamated with the Railway and Tramway Associations, and voted funds for the strikers. No further permits to ship crossbred wool to America will be issued. The Government has prohibited the importation of homeopathic medicine manufactured at Bologna on the grounds of public health. (Received 1 Feb. 4, 11.50 p.m.) The boom which has recently characterised recruiting is easing off considerably. The Federal Attorney-General lias decided that the Tasmanian Soldiers’ Liquor Restriction Bill is legal. This decision recognise s the power of the State Parliaments to forbid serving their soldiers with liquor, and is im--portant because of the possibility of wider application than in Tasmania. Launceston reports that the barquentine Vadador, bound from Oakwood to -Melbourne timber laden, drifted ashore and was wrecked in a gale at Muss'elroy Bay.- The crew, excepting Seaman L. Anderson, were saved, but lost everything. The Underwriters’ Association lias received London advices of material advances in war rates via the Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope routes. * The war loan has readied over £21,000,000. It is still increasing. The war census cards disclose That 56,631 males of enemy birth-place or parentage between the ages of 17 and 60 are resident in Australia.
