APPRECIATION OF GISBORNE’S GIFTS.

LETTERS TO HER EXCELLENCY LADY LIVERPOOL.

Her Excellency Lady Liverpool has written to the Mayoress (Mrs. W. G. Slierratt) under date January 13, enclosing some letters she has just received, about the sacks which she forwarded to the front for the Mayoress some little time back. Lady Liverpool adds: “I know you will be glad to see how much the gifts were appreciated—if you should care to publish these letters in your local papers I should be very pleased. The first letter is from Lt. Il'ume, N-Z.S.C., O.C. H.B. Company, as follows : Dear Madam: I write to acknowledge your note of September 16 advising me as to a packet of 100 pairs of socks in charge of officer commanding Base, Alexandria. I am arranging to obtain the socks and thank through you (on account of mv men) the Mayoress of Gisborne.'’

Captain H. A. Edwards, R.E., commanding Div. Sig. Co., Js.Z. Artillery Division, writes-; “I hare made arrangements to collect the parcel oi socles you have been good enough to send, and will see that the Gisborne men are served first. They will be ino-st welcome.”

Lt.-Colonel E. J. O’Neill, officer commanding N.Z. Eield Ambulance, writes: “Your Excellency: I have the honor and pleasure to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of September 14, notifying me of a gift of 100 pairs of socks for the members of my company from the ladies of Gisborne. ! On behalf of the officers, n.c.o.’s and men of my unit I would ask you to convey to the ladies of Gisborne, our sincere thanks and appreciation of their kindness and tnougiitiulfiess in forwarding such acceptable articles of clothing for our use."

Lt. M. Urkuhart, officer commanding Buabine Company, Wellington Infantry Regiment, writes: { T have the honor to inform your ladyship Hat. with reference to your notifica■w of September 14, regarding 142 H'..; of socks, sent by the Mayoress and people of Gisborne, that I have communicated with the officer commanding Base, Alexandria, asking him to forward the packet. On behalf of the officers and men of the Ruabine Company, I beg to thank your Ladyshin and the Mayoress and people of Gisborne, for this most useful and acceptable gift.”
