GUNS AGAINST AIRSHIPS. TORPEDO NETS OBSOLETE. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPT BIGHT. ] [TIMES—SYDNEY SUN SPECIAL CABLES.] (Received March 10, 5.40 p.m.) LONDON, March 10. The first appearance of a gun for use against aircraft in the British fleet was made on the Iron Duke, which is going, during the manouevres, to test two guns throwing a 12lb highly explosive shell with an effective range of 7000 yards. It is possible that the shells may not hit an airship, but it is believed that the explosion will he sufficient to bring down an aeroplane. 'l’he Iron Duke is also introducing a six-inch anti-torpcoo battery. The newest battleships are dispensing with the torpedo df fence net ; known as the crinoline, which is easily penetrated by the latest torpedoes, and is useless and obsolete. Jack Tar is not regretful because “out nets” is an unpopular order, involving, as it does, a laborious fade.
