THREE MILES IN THREE WAYS.
Some time ago Mr I*. Alien lomkins. secretary of the Thanet Hunt, who at that time was untrained, offered a wages of £lO that lie could cover three miles in 20 minutes, walking one mile, running another, and tiding the third on horseback. The wager was accepted by Air Robert Hodgman, a Ramsgate sportsman, Air Tomkins performed the feat in 18min,40 3-ssec, having lmin 19 2-ssec to spare. Hundreds of people lined the track along the main road through Stelling Alinnis, near Canterbury, and opinion as to the result seemed evenly divided Air Tomkins, who is 33 years of age, appeared in running costume and boots. Electing to run first, he covered the mile in 6min 30see. Walking the second mile, he made the fine time of 9m in 30sec. Then, unassisted, he mounted a chestnut cob and galloped the remaining stage in 2min 40 3-ssec. Loud cheers were raised as he passed the post.
