MATAWAI SPORTS.

A WELL-MANAGED MEETING. There was glorious weather for the annual sports meeting on Saturday last, and people came from near and far to attend the popular gathering. The programme contained a pleasing variety of foot, horse, chopping and sawing events, while the little folks were not forgotten. The meeting was well organised by a strong committee, headed by the joint secretaries, Messrs Loane and Tunnicliffe. The close finishes in the foot events proved that Mr Hogan had allotted the handicaps with judgment. Mr McKay made a capable starter, and all the other officials worked diligently to ensure the success of the meeting. Mr J. B. Clark acted as a veritable Santa Claus during the day, and was certainly the most popular man on the ground in the e«ti-

mation of the children. He was, however, closly run by Mr B. Loane, who handed over the prizes won by the juvenile competitors. A few spills occurred during the high jumping, but the riders around Matawai think nothing of little incidents like these. The mile race was somewhat

marred by a foolish individual running on to the track, and pacing the leading competitor during the last Jap. The Committee decided to refer the matter to the Athletic Association for decision. Mr B. Fleming, superintended the nail-driving for ladies, which proved a most popular event. The catering was in the capable hands of Mr C. Loame, who gave general satisfaction. A highly-enjoyablo day was fittingly wound up with a pleasant dance in the evening.
