SOCCER.

TURANGANUI (2) v. RANGERS (0)

Tire Turanganui-Rangers A tussle took place on the Reserve yesterday. The firstmamed team beat- their op-ponents-by 2 goals to nil. For the first half-liour the Rangers kept their opponents well back over the half-way mark, but the Turanganui forwards got away just before half-time and after a brisk melee in front of the Rangers’ goal succeeded in notching the first goal in the match, "Wallace being responsible. There was no score registered again until late in the second half, when Stone potted from a forward pass by Sumner. The teams were about equal, but Rangers were very weak in their forward line, but had most reliable backs to depend upon, Downey being “out on his own,” while Jim Somerton very capably defended between the posts, in spite of having had an accident to his leg which impaired his kicked capabilities. For Turanganui (fates showed up at full-back, while Frazer played well on the right wing. The veteran Reidy also showed up well, but is not by any means up to his last season’s form. Sumner gave an astonishing display of heading the ball, and was always ready with a powerful kick. ' Coleman played a good forward game. The game was fairly fast and attracted a goodly number of spectators, notably some well-known Rugby men, who expressed a good opinion of the play.

COUNTY (8) V. RANGERS B. (2)

The above match ’ was played at Newst-ea-d yesterday, with the result stated. Hangers played three men short, and put up _a. plucky game. Mcnzies was very fair in goal. Drube played a fine game at back. .Bardswell was the best of the-halves, and Willsliaw and Hull of the forwards. For Comity Holt played a safe back ■game, and TV-. Bagnall and Cameron were the best of the halves. All the forwards played well. Kaipara keeps on improving his education, playing a most unselfish game, and feeding his inside men and not trying to score on his own. The scores for County were. Dick (3), G. Webster (4), Bigliall (1). For Rangers, TVillshnw (1), Salmon (1).
