GISBORNE SCHOOL CARETAKER'S COTTAGE

DISCUSSED BY EDUCATION

BOARD

COMMITTEE’S REQUEST DE-

CLIXED

[BT TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL CORRESPOITDENT] NAPIER, May 29.

At the Education Board meeting today a letter was received from the secretary of the Gisborne School Committee iuTv setting out the committee’s claims in respect to tlie deduction of allowance for the caretaker’s cottage, and forwarding the following resolution passed at the householders’ meeting:—

“That in view of the action of the Hawke’s Bay Board of Education in charging the Gisborne School Committee rent for the caretaker’s cottage under a resolution passed by the Board in 1911, and seeing that the cottage and the ground on which it stands were provided specially for the Gisborne School without any direct financial assistance from the Board, and further seeing that the outgoing committee has protested again andagain at the unfairness of the Board’s action without effect, that this meeting of househo’ders instructs the incoming committee to make the strongest possible representations to the Board regarding the injustice of its action, and that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Hawke’s Bay Board of Education.”

Air. Morgan moved that tbe secretary be instructed to g-> into tbe whole matter and report to the Board. He considered that the Gisborne committee had been unfairly treated

Air. Kirk agreed that tbe Committee had been unfairly treated, but that in view of the details supplied bv the Committee, the- secretary could probably throw no more light on the matter. He considered that favorable treatment should be granted at once, and moved:—

“That notwithstanding anything in the Board’s regulations, no deduction be made from the committee’s funds in respect to rent of the caretaker’s cottage.”

This was seconded by Mr. McLeod. Tiie chairman and* Messrs. Roacli and Granite opncs?d the motion, and considered that it was enjoying an unfair advantage. Mr. Kirk rop’ied at length, covering the points raised, but on going to a vote the motion was defeated. A deputrt’on from the Hastings Committee waited on the Board in regard to the star' cf the headmaster’s house, and asked that arrangements bo made for the caretaker to reside on the premises. They suggested that the headmaster’s house should be vacated and the caretaker given it at a rental of £26.

Mr Kirk pointed out that the house was assessed* at a rental of £SO, and to do this would b? to approve in the case of Hastings; of practically the same thing as the Board condemned m the case of G’.sb rno. *

After disou'doii it was agreed to obtain a r -pert from the foreman as to the condition of the master’s house.
