A PUBLIC SPIRITED PEOPLE.
PROGRESSIVE TE IvARAKA. The township of Te Jvaraka is fast earning a. name for progressiyeness even in so progressive a district as Poverty Bay, and the Town Asociation has big schemes in sight which promise to attain concrete form before very long. The streets are now tolerably well lighted, and the road formation is certainly superior to the general run of such work in Gisborne. The unreasonableness of telephone changes is a subject which is engaging much attention, and the Te Ivaraka tradespeople are complaining of big ’phone bills for long-distance connections, and also the inadequacy of the service in every respect. A bettertimed train service is also desired, and overtures towards obtaining a. more regular time-table and a morespeedy train are being made. Of paramount importance just now, however, is the proposed drainage scheme for the town, a report on which is at present being prepared by the County Engineer (Mr Mouat). This scheme for storm-water drainage is a fairly elaborate one, and will embrace the whole of the town radius. It is estimated that a loan of £2OOO to £3OOO will be necessary for the carrying out of the work, and it is sanguinelv anticipated that the proposal will he carried to completion, There are bigger tilings ahead of Te Jvaraka, and the state of prosperity is doubtless due to the public-spirited-ness of the people residing in the district.
