PERSONAL NOTES.

The death has occurred (says a London cable) of Mr Alfred Ogle Maskill, formerly of New Zealand. Mr. H O. McFarlane, cn? of the finest ’cello players in New Zealand, has wired accepting an engagement with the Gisborne Liedertafel to perform at their opening concert on July 9.

Among the prospective candidates for the vacant seats on the Hawke’s Bay Education Board are Mr M. McLeod (the sitting member), Air. P. Andrews, and Air Oates, senr., of Tologa Bay.

Mr Birkett, salvage expert, who has been engaged on the stranded steamer Star of Canada for some days, leaves for Wellington by_the Navua to-day. He was anxious to get away yesterday and semaphored from the steamer, asking for some craft- to take liim either to the Navua or ashore. This was unnecessary, however, as the Navua does not call at the port until this morning. Air J. Daniels, the Fnion Coy s well-known salvage expert, arrived by the Tarawera on Saturday, and is now aboard the Star of Canada. Airs Hart, wife of Captain Hart, is still in the Rostrevor Private Hospital and inquiries made last evening elicited the information that .she is making excellent progress towards recovery.
