Tli© fact that fish can be secured at a great depth in Australian waters was proved by the latest cruise of the Federal fisheries investigation vessel Endeavor. During the previous cruise Mr Dannevig, the Fisheries Director came to the conclusion that the fish had moved into deep water for the winter. He secured' additional gear 4 ., and went in search. He found them. Ling a yard and! a half long, and other edible fish, were caught to a depth of 108 fathoms (648 ft.) The catch totalled between 41tons arid 5 tons, and comprised deepsea flat-head, black perch, red perch, schnapper, ling, and John Dory. Mr Dannevig states that on the whole the weather conditions were favorable. The area examined extended from a point about 20' miles south of Gabo Island to a point about 20 miles north of Montague Island. As a general thing the fish were found scattered! over the whole area. In one locality 10 1 miles off Eden (N.S.W.) they were found in large quantities. The Vacuum Oil Company have engaged the ship Queen Elizabeth, 1700 tons, to load case oil at New York for Auckland and Wellington. The same company have chartered the steamer Falls of Orchy, 4-904 tons, to load case oil at New York for Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, and Dunedin. . The steamer Lord Lonsdale was loading at New York on June 19th for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, under charter to the Vacuum Oil Co.
