V.R.C. SUMMER MEETING,, SCOTLAND WINS THE NEAVAIARKET. APOLOGUE SCORES AGAIN. (Received Alarcli L, 5.45 n.m.) FLEMINGTON, Feb. 29. There was dull weather for the opening day of the A r .R.C. autumn week. Tlio reserves looked splendid, and tho course was in good order. The Governor and party were present, and there was a large crowd. The attendance was not, however, equal to that of last year. Good fields turned out ror tlie opening day. Portcullis fell and broke his shoulder, and had to be shot. Little excitement centred on tlie Leger, the result being fully expected. Alountain King missed the stand two lengths in front- of Peru aiid four lengths from Lady Uvlstone. On the far sule Mountain King was a length ahead of Peru. Approaching the straight Lady Rylstone spurted, but Mountain King got away when entering the straight, and being unextended won by four lengths. Time, 3mur Newmarket Handicap-—Scotland 1, Hood 2, Grenadier 3. Also started : King, Akim IHio, Bolton, Fraqair, Miss Bobby, Currandoolcy. Scratched : Geebung and Send Off. Scotland was the first to show out from Antonio. Dusky ALorn, and Tangaroa, outlie rails. After a furlong Fraquair was leading from North Head and Step Out and Fille Fogi. Passing the tan Fille Fogi led Dusky Morn, Currandooley, iScotland, and langaroa but into the course proper Scothind led from Dusky Alorn and the rest of the field, with Scotland across the track. The Now Zealand horse then made way tor Grenadier* Akim Poo, and Alunjeet. Fraquair was last. Scotland won by two lengths, with three-quarters of a length separating the others. Time. Imm 14j sees.
