PALMERSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEMBERS STILL AT VARIANCE.

Press Association. PALMERSTON, Feb. 28. The Palmerston North Borough Council held a special meeting last night, in response to a requisition signed by three councillors, to consider the matter.of tlie resignation of Mr. Smith, curator of the borough reserves. Cr. Clausen moved, and Cr. Mathison seconded, that Mr. Smith be asked to reconsider his resignation. Councillors generally pointed out that Mr. Smith was a very man, and had done good work in the reserves, and it would be a nitv to lose him. The Mayor (Cr.' Essex) refused to take the motion, saying that he had been deliberately insulted by Mr. Smith through the press, and after a prolonged and heated discussion Cr. Nash moved that the matter be referred to the Reserves Committee, with power to act, and Cr. Stubbs seconded the motion. The Mayor said that the amendment was useless, as if the committee reported that the resignation had been withdrawn, lie would be com-, pelled to refuse to accept the report. He also stated that lie would be prepared to consider tlie matter if Mr. Smith withdrew the letter he had written to the press, and publicly apologised to him for the statements he had made. Eventually the Council adjourned till Tuesday next without either motion or amendment being put, or any definite decision being arrived at. It was decided to instruct the borough solicitor to issue a writ against the gas company, to determine the validity of its agreement with the council.
