GISBORNE DRAINAGE.

THIS DISTRICTS AFFECTED

Air. M('.stayer’s drainage report is at present before the Finance Committee of tlie Borough Council. The Council in committee suggested that areas (>, 7,8, and 12, be omitted for tlio present. Jt is proposed to borrow £50,000 at once to proceed with the drainage of areas I, 2, and 3 that £20,000 be raised in live yea i'k for areas 4, 10, and 13, and that £20,000 be borrowed within ten years for areas 6,9, 11, and 14, as may bo needed. This is the present resolution which has to be con finned by the Council. The moving spirits in tlie Council on this question desire to liave che completed scheme in augurated, and although the present proposal only provides for a part of tlie borough being drained in the meantime, they aro of opinion that-once the initial steps are taken the whole of the residents of the borough will desire to participate in the benefits. They anticipate that there will be no difficulty in providing for the whole of the areas as long as the people will vote the money, so that there should be no necessity to wait for the ten years to have everybody connected. Under the present mapping, a portion of Childers road is included in No. C area, which tlio committee recommend should stand over at present, and it has been suggested that No. 4 bo extended to include this portion of Childers road. The marked plans can bo seen outside Cr. W. Miller’s shop. Inquiry was made by a reporter yesterday as to the cost of tlie installation to the individual housebolder. Tlie replies differed to some extent, and figures between £7 and £2O were given. It seemed, however, that everything, including the drains, piping, flush, . and cistern, house connections, etc., could be put, in to the average house at about £ls. To make the matter clear to ratepayers, the following particulars' as to localities of the areas are given:— Areas 1,2, and 3 consist of thatportion of the town from Read’s Quay along the Taruheru river, down near Roebuck Road to the beach, and round again to Read’s Quay. The hospital is included Areas 4, 10, and 13 are roughly the portion to the westward of Roebuck Road and Kaiti and Whataupoko.
