SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AWARDS.

PRESENTATION AT GISBORNE SCHOOL. At the Gisborne school yesterday afternoon the medal and certificates .von by pupils for good attendance during last year were presented. Air J. Somervell, chairman of the school committee made the presentations, and was accompanied by the Rev. AY. Grant, and Alessrs G. V\ ildish ami A\ . L File, members of tho committee. A small number of visitors were present. Mr Somervell made a few appropriate remarks, urging on the children the necessity for regular attendance at school. Mr Rowley, headmaster, said that tho mfmbcr of certificates was smaller last year than in the previous year, hut taking into account that a severe epidemic of measles had visited the town last year, it could very well he claimed that an improvement had been shown. . He urged tho children to attend school regularly, because by so doing they helped the teachers considerably—it might well lie'said that every girl or boy who absented' himself or herself from school for a day kept every pupil in tho class back a day in their studies.

The Rev. AV. Grant, in proposing a vote of thanks' to the visitors, spoke of the great value in after life of tlie awards made that day. Tlie Minister of Education bad said that the Gisborne school building were the best in the Dominion, and lie (Air Grant) felt sure that through the Dominion there could not be a better staff than tlie school had.

Cheers were given for Air. Somervell, for Mr. Rowley, for the, teachers, and for the staff, and the children were then dismissed for the rest of tlie afternoon.
