BAD SMELLS.

I Sir,—Last evening myself and two I ladies had occasion to go by way of I Customhouse streot, and when passI ing Hia Majesty’s Theatre wo onI countered a most “awful stench, I which almost took our breath away I (chloroform was not in it).. Tho first I abominublo smoll wo noticed came I from between Messrs Williams and I Kottlo’s and tho Theatre, and beforo I we had time to recover from that I one, wo encountered aaiother still I worse, which came from behind the I hoarding board. 1 remombor last I summer tho deadly odour that carno I from tho same two places, and it is I only spring yet, so goodness knows I what it will be like in tho summer I time. It is a well-known tact that I these two places are troated as conI venieucee by frequenters of the I Theatre, a thing that would not bo tolerated in any other town. I would suggest that a largo gate be erected between the hoarding board and the fence of tho little cottage next- door. This is another, strong argument io show that it is high time our Mayor and Councillors should think of erecting public urinals. Gisborne is not too wholesome a town at any time, and I think it behoves tho authorities, wliose duty it is, to do their utmost to improve the sanitary conditions of the town. In conclusion, I might say it is a great pity Dr. Ogston was not taken round py way of tho theatre for a stroll when ho was here a while ago. Trusting the inspector or tho authorities whose duty it is will remedy the complaint to which I refer.—l am, etc:, “NOT SANDOW.” Gisborne, Sept. 29.
