A reply was received from the Colonial Secretary’s Office to the request for the Constitution of a Fire District (Fire Brigades Act, 1906). Section 5 of that Act, it was stated, provided that all appointments and elections be held in May, 1907. No provision was made for the formation of Boards after that date, but it was proposed to introduce an amending Bill this session, which would overcame the difficulty. Meanwhile it was not considered expedient to constitute any additional Fire Districts. The Engineer reported :—Roebuckroad Bridge: This work is progressing rtibisafctonily. Tile hulk of the steel work has been assembled and, a portion of the deck laid. Espla underoad : About 41- chains in front of the Freezing Works lias been shingled, in addition to that portion which lias been made up with sand, nicking an approximate total of 14 chains. Ab-attoir-road : Rians and specifications have been prepared for tho forming and shingling of a portion of this rand. Tenders for the work will ho available on October Ist. Whitakerstreet: This road is unformed between Balilancc-street and Wi Perestiect. At present there are but'two houses in this section. The cosit of bringing i.fc down to permanent level with a pipe drain a-t the western end would be approximately' £IBO. In my opinion Clifford-street, between Wi ■ Pere-dtreet mid the boundary, should be attended to first as the road and foo,tp-a,t]is -are unformed. and there arc nine good houses in the section against two in Whitak'erstreet.- —Cr. Williams moved that the suggestion re Cliiford-sitreclt he adopted.—Ur. Sheridan seconded. —Cr. Sawyer said that some of the older parts of the Borough deserved attention first, such as Btanley-'road.-Cr. Mann: The Wliataupoko people also have to pay nates. —-The Mayor said the Engineer could report on the matter before any authorisation was made. —Approved.
