(Per Press Association.) Opotiki, last night. Tho Hon, Mr Carrol), Native Minister, left Opotiki on Tuesday for Maraenui, a Maori settlement, where ho unveiled .a memorial Btone erected to the memory of 15 children, who, together with two adults, of the Whaoau Apanui tribe, lost their lives crossing the Motu river in a oanoe. Tho memorial stone, which cost -2140, consists of a handsome pedestal of white Italian marble, 16ft in height, mounted on three large blocks of dressod granite, standing on a concrete base, surrounded with an iron railing. The pedestal is beautifully carved. On its sides are the names of the victims, and an inscription in Maori,

Wellington, iast night. The City Council has discussed a request from the Council of Churches that tramways should cease running during church hours on Sundays, and it was resolved that the cars should slow down to ■three miles an hour, and no bells or whistles be sounded in the vioinity of ohnrches.

The writ for the Wellington bye-eleo-tion was issued to-day. The election will probably be held on Thursday, April 13.

. Picton, last night. Charles P. Neilson, manager and part owner of the King Solomon mine at Cullensville, was accidently killed jtbis morning by coming in contact with a water Wheel.
