Fe.« Press Association. Nelson, last night. A young man named Brewor, employed by tho Parapara Sluicing Company has confessed to stealing gold, about fifty ounces, from the sluice boxes, and which gold had been planted. By a fire at Brightwater vicarage, the Rev. G. Baker lost most of his furniture and effects, including his library, which was uninsured.
Afc a mooting of tho Nelson Chamber of Commerce to-night the report of the Parliamentary Committee was adopter]. It opposed tiro State Fire Insurance Bill on the ground of uncalled for interference with private enterprise; declared the Shops and Offices Bill interference with the liberty of the subject, and hoped for material alterations; approved of the woights and measures* and the introduction ot the metric system ; approved of clause 299 of the Seamen and Shipping Bill; approved of the Coastwise Trade Bill, and as to the Fire Prevention Bill considered it objectionable to make public the business of companies, and to muko the insured pay twice over to the maintenance of fire brigades. At tbe same time it thought it judicious and perfectly equitable that insurance companies should make some contribution to ensure increased efficiency of fire brigades. The Chamber also approved of the sehemo for improved drainage of Nelson.
