TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS Per Press Association. Auckland, last night. An important report was presented to the Education Board this morning by the committee appointed to examine and rereport upon the financial position of the manual and technical instruction account. The committee recommended (1) that application bo made to Government for tho immediate payment of a grant of £250 for the year J 902, and of a like grant for the year 1903 for the training of teachers in subjects of manual and technical instruction, such application to bo supported by a detailed statement of tho outlay already incurred by tho Board in providing means of such training; (2) that a claim bo again submitted to tho Government for a further grant of .£IOOO towards the cost of building and fitting up manual class room 3 at tho three centres ; (3) that application be mado to tho Minister of Education for advaneo payment on account of capitation earned by the technical school and manual classes respectively; (4) that whereas under tho Act the capitation grant for manual aud technical classes is fixed at a uniform rate of threepence, the Government should be asked to introduce a Bill during the present session of Parliament to provido for the payment of a higher capitation grant for advanced classes. Mr George, the director, sent in a statement recommending certain alterations in the Act regarding capitation, and also suggested that power be given to the local authorities to levy a special rate for technical education and manual training. Tho vote taken by the Education Board among their teachers with regard to tho proposal to hold a summer school during tho next summer holidays, has resulted in 294 teachers voting for tho proposal and 242 against it. The country teachers were generally in favor of holding the school, and the town teachers generally against it. The matter was referred to the Committee that dealt with the school last year.
