Colonial mails from Auckland of 29th August arrived in London on the morning of the 28th inst. ; from .Melbourne oi 27th August arrived in London on afternoon of 28th inst.

A man was arrested by Con.ital-.e Keenan, at one o’clock tills morning, for being illegally on the piemi.-es o' Hie Hon. J. Can oil, on the WMkanae.

At- the meeting of the Borough Council last night it was stated that a new restaurant was to he built on .Mr Matthew's property, the building being 17 feet wide by 50 feet. The Charitable Aid Board field the monthly meeting after the Council had concluded its business last night, and general business was transacted. The visiting committee for next month aie Messrs Harding and Hepburn. The City Shaving and Hairdressing soloon will be opened this morning in the premises adjoining Mr \V. Morgan’s shop, Gladstone road. Mr C. Morse, the enterprising proprietor, lias spitted no expense in having the saioon fitted up on the most up-_to date lines, and the public are invited to look in to day und inspect tiie shop. The apartments have been handsomely decorated and furnished throughout, and everything possible lias been done to assure the comfort of tho public. In connection with tho saloon, Mr Morse has a first-class stock of tobacco, cigars, and fancy goods, and in any of tbeso lines one can rely upon obtaining just what one is looking for.

Yesterday a compensation case of special interest to the public was before the Native Land Court, when Judge Batham heard the claim of native owners for compensation for portions of the Waioharore block, taken by the Gisborno Borough Council and Cook County Council under tho Public Works Act, for the purposes of cemetery and abattoirs reserves. Mr DeLautour appeared for tho Couuty Council and Mr Clinsp for tho Borough Council. Evidence was given by Messrs T. Chrisp, George Grant, Major Winter, F. Harris, John Warren, and W. J. Quigley, all going to show that tho fair valuo of tho land was between To and Tti an acre. The case for the local bodies bus closed, and the Court adjourned to enable tho natives to get evidence, if they wished it, as to the value of tho property.
