The Gisborne school children have an extra holiday to-day on account of the anniversary of the King’s Birthday. At the Police Court yesterday a woman named Nora Riley was lined 10s, with 4s costs, or 24 hours’ imprisonment, for drunkenness.

There are unclaimed letters at the Post Office for L. 11. Jackson, \V. C. Currie, 11. J. Eraser, S. Sargcant (2), W. 11. Parton, C. S. Currie.

Copies of a pamphlet, issued by the Hoalth Department on the subject of enteric or typhoid fever, may be obtained, free, from the Town Clerk. Mr F. S. Tho East Coast Mounted Rillcs hold their second grand military tournament at the Park Racecourse to-morrow, and tho gathering promises to bo very largely attended. A capital programme has been prepared, and the largo number of entries received for the different events should produce some exciting contests.

Frank M. Clark’s “ Muldoon Picnic ” Company drew a crowded house at their opening performance in Gisborne last evening, and from the enthusiasm shown the company is likely to have a most successful season. On Saturday night a grand holiday programme is promised, and it will bo a fine opportunity for a jolly wind-up to the holiday-making of the dav.

Tho following candidates, who presented themselves for Trinity College practical music from the Gisborne Convent, passed successfully :—Senior Division : Pianoforte playing, Cecelia Agnes Bohan (Sister M. Agnes). Intermediate Division : Rose Liddell. Junior Division (violin) : Dora Booth. The examination was held at the Cathedral Hall, Napier, by Mr A. Mistoroski. Several shipments of American and colonial boots and shoes have been received by Mr W. Birch, and are beiug offered at the lowest price for cash. Some very pretty American tan shoes for ladies are "included in the new stock, whilst the consignment of gents' tan boots, colonial and American manufacture, include some very choice lines, for which there should he good demand. The Excelsior Boot Depotwill be open this evening, when the new goods may be inspected.

Tho Star of Gisborne Lodge, No. 61, 1.0.0. F., A.C., held their usual fortnightlymeeting last evening at the Lodge room, Masonic Hall, Bro. J. H. Colebourne, N.G., presiding. Five candidates were elected, two elected candidates initiated in an impressive manner by the various officers, and four new members proposed. The next meeting will be the first night for nomination of officers for the next term, when it is expected that several of tho offices to be fillc-d will be contested by various Brethren anxious to be exalted. An emergency meeting to confer degrees will be held next Tuesday evening at 7.50, on all wishing to advance in the Order. A full attendance is requested, so as to enable the dramatic parts to be rendered for the first time in Gisborne,
