NINE MONTHS’ GAOL FOR FRAUD
(P.A.)
AUCKLAND, Aug. 26.
On one of seven charges of false pretences, Eric Neville Hill, aged 39, a cook and barman, was yesterday sentenced in the Police Court to six months’ imprisonment. On another he was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the terms to be cumulative. On the other charges he was convicted and discharged. Hill admitted all offences.
The police said that Hill cashed valueless cheques at Kihikihi and Te Awamutu. He hired a taxi at Hamilton and came to Auckland. The fare was £6 10/-. He “paid” with an unsigned cheque for £7/10/-, telling the driver he could keep the other pound. The magistrate, Mr. J. H. Luxford, said that Hill had a bad list of previous convictions, having twice been admitted to probation.
