MR. G. J. GARLAND DIES AT AGE OF 94 YEARS

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. Aug. 28. ivir. George Joseph Garland, onetime member ot tne New Zealand Legislative Council, died in hospital on Friday night at the age of 9% years. After his retirement irom the Upper House in 1932 Mr. Garland lived a retired life, but until recently was often seen in the city. . He came witn his parents from Bridgnorth. Shropsnire, England, and was aged four wnen they settled on a farm on lVfanuKau Harbour. He later served in tne crew of a schooner owned by his lather and engaging in coastal trade to Lyttelton and later- across the Tasman'and to the eastern and western Pacific. He returned to the land after 14 years at sea and settled on the larm ne inherited. , . An accicient in 1896 compelled him to relinquish farming. He brought his family to Auckland and entered the business of land valuing. With an unquencnaole interest in public affairs he became a prominent ffgure in local politics and served as a member of a very large number of local bodies. He was chairman of several. Mr. Garland was an honorary organiser of the political Reform Party of New Zealand. In 1918 he was appointed to the Legislative Council. Mrs. Garland, formerly of Glasgow, who married in 188 U, died in 1934.
