MATEROA HOME'S BUILDING MAY BE BEGUN SOON

The plans for the new Heni Materoa Home had been completed, the building permit granted, and it was hoped to call tenders in the near future, the president of the Cook County Women's Guild, Mrs. J. B. Williams, reported at the annual meeting this week. Due to the increased cost of living, a further rise in fees at the home had been found unavoidable, and the 17/6 fee had been raised to £l, inclusive of the family benefit.

An average of 22 children —17 Europeans and five Maoris —have been resident at the home during the year. Their health has been good, as usual, the president stated, with the exception of a few minor ailments. Their behaviour. at borne and at school, has been most creditable. Many Give Assistance

The thanks of the committee were due, Mrs. Williams said, to many people who. individually and collectively, had given great assistance in the maintenance of the home. It was to be regretted that Mr. D. Borne, who had given religious instruction to the children on many Sundays this year, was shortly to leave New Zealand. _ His kindness and interest in the children had endeared him to them, and he would be greatly missed. It was fortunate that Miss Wallace had agreed to carry on Mr. Borne's -work after his departure. Thanks were due to the house committee and the clothing committee for the conscientious manner in which they had carried out their duties. The committee's gratitude also was expressed to the Heni Materoa auxiliary committee for its help in raising funds for the new home, and to the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce for planting and caring for trees and shrubs on the new site, to the Public Service Association for a Sunday spent in cleaning up the grounds of the present home, and to the staff of the home for their consistent help and co-opera-tion. The Child Welfare Departments unfailing assistance and co-operation were also recorded with gratitude, and all members of the public who bad helped with donations of money, food and clothing were assured that it was only with their generous support that the' home could be maintained. Mrs. Williams recorded her appreciation of the unfailing support and loyal help of the vice-presidents and members of the committee. New Members on Committee

- The death of Mrs. Munro, one of the oldest and most energetic members of the committee, was noted with regret. Three new members were welcomed to the committee —Mesdames T. Corkery. H. Kemp and D. Foley. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mrs. J. B. Williams: vicepresidents. Mesdames B. Tyerman and W. Neal: secretary. Mr. E. T. Gardner: minute secretary. Mrs. C. F. Williams: committee, Mesdames C. Angell, I. Primrose, B. Kemp, H. Cockrem, x. Corkery, A. Tuke, H. Kemp, D. Foley, C. Isaac, P. Morley. and Miss Hooper.
