More Arms Aid To Europe Vital Now--Connally

(11 a.m.) WASHINGTON. June 23. Urging more military aid to Europe, Senator Tom Connally today told the Senate: "You cannot afford to spend time discussing fire prevention methods when a criminal is at that very moment setting fire to, your house." Senator Connally (Democrat, Texas) was speaking during an open debate on the Foreign Arms Aid Bill. Some o f its provisions are expecter to meet Republican opposition. Senator Connally said the United States was working hard on powerful new weapons. However, it would be a serious mistake to place such reliance on the development of these arms that the immediate task of building up Europe’s defences would be neglected.
