NEW WEAPONS COULD DEFEND WEST EUROPE

(10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, June 23. Two Senate committees reported today that Western Europe could be defended with new mass-produced weapons without'matching an enemy division for division or tank for tank. The Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees made this report to the Senate in urging the adoption of foreign arms and programme. The report said the development of news arms was mostly in the field of recoilless weapons, special explosives that gave great promise against tanks and new uses for types of fuses set off by proximity to targets. Meanwhile, the Senate Appropriations sub-committee approved of a programme to convert 10 submarines into “snorkel" type and modernise 'hem at a cost of 2,200.000 dollars each. The sub-committee also approved of the modernisation of six destroyers at an unspecified cost. ___ Wedding Gifts: A lovely range at prices to suit all at A. Stoneham & Co. ' Ltd,.
