ARMY DEFAULTERS SENT TO GAOL

(P.A.) AUNCKLAND, June 23. Last week, eight years after he failed to report for service in the armed forces, Hector Henry Berry, aged 42, a hotel porter, married, with one child, was arrested in Auckland.

Today he pleaded guilty to failing to report at Wellington. He was convicted and sentenced to two months' hard labour.

“I don’t know how many defaulters there are still at large in New Zealand,” said the magistrate, Mr. J. H. Luxford, “ but there is a definite obligation on the authorities to bring each one before the court to pay the penalty.”
