FOURTH GISBORNE FARM SCHOOL FIRST WEEK IN JULY

The official opening of the fourth annual farm school to be conducted in Gisborne on July 6 and 7 by the Gisborne Veterinary Club will be carried out by Mr. D. S. Hcndrie. the agricultural attache to the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom. The farm school programme actually will be commenced on July 5 with a full clay of lectures at Wairoa. The Wairoa school will be opened by the club president, Mr. L. L. C. Field. Inherited defects of farm animals will be dealt with by Mr. J. S. Hancock, senior geneticist, animal research station, Ruakura, the choice of fat lamb sires by Mr. R. A. Barton, lecturer in animal husbandry, Massey Agricultural College. Following the luncheon break members of the veterinary club staff will give a series of small lectures. The care of farm-killed sheepskins will be dealt with by Mr. R. G. Montgomery, sheep and wool instructor to the Department of Agriculture. Hastings, nutrition of the breeding sow by Mr. D. M. Smith, senior research officer. Ruakura animal research station. The day will be concluded by a "Brains Trust” for which questions should be prepared. Gisborne School Opening

On Thursday, the Gisborne school will be opened with the annual general meeting, following which Mr. Hcndrie will declare the school opened. The choice of fat lamb sires will be repeated by Mr. Barton, as will the care of farm-killed sheep skins by Mr. Montgomery. The session for shepherds in the first afternoon of the school will include the care of station hacks and of working dogs, the topics being dealt with by veterinary club staff. Important poultry diseases in New Zealand will be the subject of an address by Mr. J. J. Thompson, Live Stock Division, Department of Agriculture, Auckland, worms, drenches, and hoggets by Mr. R. Crawford, feeding sheep for maximum returns by Professor I. L. Coop, professor in animal husbandry. Lincoln Agricultural College, and the day will be concluded with a post mortem on a sheep. The programme for Friday will consist of inherited defects of farm animals by Mr. J. S. Hancock, Ruakura, managing a dairy farm by Dr. C. P. McMeekan, nutrition of the breeding sow by Mr. D. M. Smith, Ruakura and the entire afternoon will be given over to the "Brains Trust."
