VISITORS AND GUESTS Miss Barbara Davis, Haronga Road, left yesterday for a visit to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Low, Mangakino, are visiting Gisborne. They are the guests of Mrs. Frank SherrifT, Hurahura Road. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dods, Waifiaoa, recently returned home after a visit to Hastings.

Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Cotterill, “Makarika,” Tokomaru Bay, were visitors to Gisborne this week; Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Ginn, Stout Street, have returned home after a visit to Waikaremoana. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Gaddum, “Ponui,” Mohaka, were visitors to Gisborne this week for the football. Mrs. R. G. Sherwood-Hale who arrived in New Zealand from England in the Rangitoto last Wednesday is the guest of Dr. Nina Muir, Sievwright Lane. Mrs. Sherwood-Hale plans to be in New Zealand for about three months.

Mrs. R. K. Murphy, Muriwai, has returned home after a visit to Hawke's Bay.

Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Williams, “Titiraukena,” Ruatoria, have _ returned home after a short visit to Gisborne. Mrs. Winton Porter, Hangaroa, is spending a few days in town. She is staying with her sister, Miss R. Wauchop, Fox Street. Mrs. M. J. Crawford. Wanganui, has been visiting Gisborne. She was staying with her sister, Mrs. J. B. Treader, Townley Street. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Barton, Ruatoria, paid a brief visit to Gisborne this week. They were the guests of Mrs. J. G. Nolan, Richardson Avenue.

Miss D. Fitzgerald, Rere, left yesterday on a visit to Auckland. Mrs. D. C. Morice. Muriwai, returned home at the beginning of the week after a visit to Wanganui. Miss J. Low, Nelson, has left Gisborne after staying with her sister, Mrs. D. Taylor, Roebuck Road. Mrs. W. F. Metcalfe and Miss Beverley Metcalfe, Te Araroa, were visitors to Gisborne this week. They were the guests of Mrs. P. Taylor, Wainui Beach.

Mrs. R. Davey. Lower Hutt, is visiting Gisborne for a fortnight. She is staying with her sister, Mrs. L. G. Bennett, Centennial Crescent. Mrs. W. Lange, Whatatutu, is a visitor to Tolaga Bay. Mrs. C. P. Sherratt, Hangaroa, has returned home after a short visit to Gisborne. She was staying with her mother-in-law, Mrs. P. H. Sherratt, Wainui Beach.

Miss Patricia Holden, Rimunui, returned this week after a short visit to Hawke’s Bay. Misses Elizabeth Connor and Anne Kerse, Dunedin, have been staying with Mrs. A. A. Foster, Waimiro station, Waimata Valley. Mrs. T. A. N. Corson and her daughter Robin, Riverside Road, have returned home after a visit to Auckland. Visitors to Tiniroto for the recent hunts and field day included Mrs. N. B. O'Malley, Frasertown: Miss J. Bruce, Messrs. G. J. Nolan, M. Bull, Ruakituri; Mr. C, Mossman, Waerenga-o-kuri; Mr. and Mrs. E. Trafford, Mr. John Harris; Messrs. H. G., D. and T. Tombleson, Nuhaka; Mr. and Mrs. P. Mossman and family, Waerenga-o-kuri. Mr. and Mrs. T. W. G. Tombleson and Miss Ann Tombleson, Rakaipeaka, Nuhaka, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. T. Coleman, Tiniroto, for the hunts and field day. Mr. and Mrs. K. Evans, Waikatea station, stayed with Mr. and Mrs. V. NobleCampbell, Tiniroto, for the hunts. BRITISH RUGBY TEAM ENTERTAINED Many people gathered at the Army Hall on Wednesday night, when they had the opportunity of meeting members of the British Isles touring Rugby team. Stuart Sheet's Orchestra provided the music for dancing and Colin Nunn’s orchestra played the extras. BEFORE THE BALL Mrs. C. W. Stacey invited friends to her home in Muir Street prior to going to the combined ball in the Army Hall on Wednesday night. The hostess greeted her guests wearing a black skirt and a green evening blouse trimmed with beading. Bowls of carnations ana jonquils were the decorations in the house. LEAGUE OF MOTHERS Continuing her earlier talk on Malta, Mrs. M. Waldron described the domestic life in that country to members of the League of Mothers at their June meeting. Mrs. E. A. Muis wai in the chair. Mrs. J. R. Samson read the scripture, Mrs. J. B. Waugh gave the “thought" and Mrs. D. Dale supplied the hint for the month. Two vocal solos were contributed by Mrs P. Beets. The hostesses served afternoon tea. PLUNKET SOCIETY The Gisborne branch of the Plunket Society held its monthly meeting last Monday, Mrs. Musgrave presiding. Others present were Mesdames Carter, F. Fenwick, L. Martin, J. Hill, G. Robertson, Greenstreet, McCulloch, J. Beckett, P. Sibley, Newton, De Costa. A. 0. Clare, and Miss D. Bagnall. Nurses report: New babies, 42; visits of babies to homes, 247; babies to rooms, 551; pre-school children to rooms, 105. GISBORNE BURNS CLUB The ladies’ committee of the Gisborne Burns Club held a successful social and dance for members and friends in the Oddfellows Hall, Mangapapa, on Saturday evening. After the singing of “The Star o’ Robbie Eurns" the dance programme commenced. It was interspersed with novelty competitions which were entered into with keen enjoyment. A fashion parade of ladies’ wearing apparel displayed by men mannequins was received with great amusement and acclaimed the best novelty of the evening. Items were a duet by Misses June Hall and Nancy Turbitt and a song by Mrs. Cleaver. The evening was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” METHODIST FIRESIDE CLUB The monthly meeting of the Methodist Fireside Club was held on Wednesday night at the parsonage, Gladstone Road. There was a large attendance, and two visitors were welcomed. Devotions and a short story were read by Mrs, E. Eastham. The speaker for the evening was Sister Winifred Poole. Sister Poole, who is home on furlough from the British Solomon Islands, gave an interesting talk on her first two years on the Mission Station at Scotatin, near Bougainville. She spoke of the training of the young girls and boys on the island, and the care of orphaned babies; also of the medical work. The president, Mrs. E. Russell, thanked Sister Poole for her interesting talk. | Supper was served by Mesdames F. i Vincent, E. Eastham, and G. Cook.

WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FEDERATED FARMERS

A very satisfactory financial balance was reported by the assistant treasurer, Mrs. Hyde, at yesterday’s meeting of the Women's Division of Federated Farmers, Gisborne branch.

Members stood in silence in sympathy with Mrs. C. W. Tomlinson, whose sister-in-law. Mrs. Lynn, England, died recently in Gisborne. A letter of thanks for two 401 b. tins of fat was received from the King George's Sanatorium for Sailors, England.

Keen regret was expressed on the receipt of a letter from Mrs. Carruthers. tendering her resignation from the Gisborne branch as her husband had been transferred to Rotorua.

Mrs. Renner reported on the recent meeting of the National Council of Women, and presented several remits for consideration. The remits to be dealt with at the coming W.D.F.F. conference in Wellington were read by the delegate, Mrs. R. N. Muir. It was unanimously decided that a contribution of E 3 should be donated to the conference in Wellington. The sum of 5/- was voted as the branch's contribution towards a presentation to Mrs. Stephenson, editor of the W.D.F.F. magazine "The N.Z. Countrywoman,” who is retiring. Flowers were sent to Mrs. McKenzie, a member who Is in hospital. Mrs. W. Oakden read a resume of the Gisborne 30,000 Club's future activities. Competitions resulted:—Flowers: Mrs. A. White, 1; Mrs. H. Armstrong, 2; Mrs. R. N. Muir. 3. Vegetables: Mrs. Lister, l. Fruit: Mrs. H. Armstrong, 1; Mrs. F. Anderson, 2; Mrs. Mills, 3. CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE Miss E, Keany presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Catholic Womens League held last Thursday in St. Marys Parish Hall. Attention was given to final arrangements Cor tne and also to the matter of providing curtains for the parish hall. The secretary, Mrs. Gordon Gregory, who is the newly-elected representative of the league on the National Council of Women, gave a comprehensive report of her first attendance at a meeting of the council. Mrs. D. J. Foley also reported on her attendance at a Hem Materoa Home meeting, The Rev. Father Berridge expressed his gratitude to Mesdames Foley, Hickey, and Silvester for their efforts in securing suitable material for the hall curtains. The various circle leaders all reported steady progress with their groups, while Mrs. J. Crowley, convener of the mission circle, advised the meeting that a further food parcel had been forwarded to a convent in France by her circle.

An amusing hidden parcel competition was won by Mrs. K. F. Jones. Large bowls of early spring bulbs were used for decoration in the supper room, where Mrs. M. Cleary had the assistance of Mesdames Howard, E. T. Gardner, -G. Butcher, Gilchrist, Hickey and E. Hinton in serving afternoon tea.
