“OPERATION SCUTTLE” LONG SEA SERVICE WILL END BARQUE’S

(P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 23. Bombs, rockets and machine-gun fire will end the long sea service of’the old barque. Lutterworth, at one o’clock on Saturday afternoon as Mosquito and Harvard aircraft swoop over her in “operation scuttle.” Loaded with unsalvageable cargo from the Waipiata, the Lutterworth is to be sunk three miles south of Turakarae Head—provided there is an offshore wind. Officials announced yesterday that the operation will be abandoned if a southerly is blowing. In that case it is likely that some alternative method will be used to sink the ship. ■ Although only six planes, four Mosquitoes and two Harvards, will take part in the sinking itself, a total of 1G aircraft will play parts in the operation
