South Island Hockey Win Over North

(PA.) _ WANGANUI, June 5. Superior combination and greater polish in the forwards gave South Island a well-merited win by three goals to two in the inter-island hockey match played at Cook's Gardens on Saturday. South played the best hockey and but for some excellent work by the North right back, J. Buchan, of Auckland, they would probably have won by a greater margin. The ground was in excellent order for the game which was played before an attendance of about 900. Apart from some scrappy play in the second spell the hockey was of a high standard and a strong New Zealand team should be available for the tour of Australia. The Dominion team, consisting of 17 players, is to be announced after the trial in Palmerston North today. Territorial honours in the first spell went to South, but half-time came with the score one all. Scorers for South were Brownlie and Smith, South’s other goal was awarded as a penalty for obstruction. For North the scorers were Partridge and Englert.
