MEDICAL BURSARIES OF OTAGO STUDENTS
(P.A. DUNEDIN, April 1. “Someone has not correctly stated the position.” said the Minister of Health, Mr. J. T. Watts today in reference to a Dunedin report that 1G of 17 Otago second-year medical students whose bursaries were not renewed earlier this year had been informed yesterday that the bursaries had now been granted. “Sixteen bursaries have not been renewed. They are new bursaries to be granted for the first time this year.” The public might have the impression that he had interfered with students who already had bursaries, the Minister added, but this was entirely incorrect. The Hi cases were reconsidered because the students concerned did not complete their applications fully. The application form contained a clause asking for the financial circumstances of the applicants, if they wished to give that information. In some cases the information was not full enough and the Health Department sent out telegrams asking for further information. In cases where no financial representations were made those factors naturally were not considered. The Minister said be intended to take an early opportunity of giving the public the full history of medical and dental bursaries.
