LAW SOCIETY’S COMPLIMENT TO MR. J. S. WAUCHOP

Members of the Gisborne Lav.’ Society on Friday marked the retirement from practice of Mr. J. S. Wauchop by a complimentary gathering, at which many compliments were paid to his long and honourable service to the legal profession. The proceedings were Informal, but several speakers, including Mr. W. C. Kohn, president of the Gisborne Law Society, Messrs. F. W. Nolan, L. T. Burnard, G. Bradley Smith, L. C. Parker, and G. J. Jeune referred to the services which Mr. Wauchop had given to the law. and his contributions to the standing of the profession. All joined in expressing their appreciation of the co-operative spirit which Mr. Wauchop had shown in dealing with matters of law, and younger men among the speakers paid tribute to the helpful attitude he had invariably adopted to practitioners less profoundly versed in procedure and, possessed of only a tithe of his experience. Friendly Co-operation In his acknowledgment, Mr. Wauchop expressed his own indebtedness to fel-low-practitioners in Gisborne for their friendly co-operation, and for the maintenance of the highest standards of professional conduct.

He recalled many examples of Interest to the gathering .and referred to the assistance he had himself received as a much younger man entering the law. His long association with the LawSociety in Gisborne had left him many happy memories, he said, and he looked forward to lona continuance of a friendly relationship, despite the fact of his retirement from practice.

Mr Wauchop came to Gisborne as a young man in the teaching profession, in which he achieved a senior status before taking up the study of the law. In 1914 he entered a long-established firm in partnership with the late Messrs. A. W. Rees and H. E. Bright, which then took the title of Messrs. Rees, Bright and Wauchop. Later Mr. L. C. Parker joined the firm and continued his association with it for a number of years before taking up practice on his own account. Another former member of the firm was Mr. T. S. Wauchop, a son of Mr. J. S. Wauchop whose death on active service occasioned deep regret throughout the profession. During the Second World War. Mr. Wauchop was a member of a military service appeal board from 1941 to 1943, and he retired from this appointment to return to practice. In 1946 Mr. W. C. Kohn joined the firm, and from that time the title has incorporated his name.
