MINISTER REPLIES TO OTAGO CHARGE OF DISCOURTESY
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. March 31. Comment on the allegations that he had been “extremely discourteous” to a deputation from the Otago Expansion League was made yesterday by the Minister of Works, Mr. W. S. Goosman. A message from Dunedin reported Mr. D. R. McDiarmid as having made the allegation and having stated that the Minister apparently did not want to listen to a deputation and was continually looking over and talking to a secretary. Mr. Goosman said yesterday that no discourtesy was intended. “If in the rush to receive the large number of deputations I received in Dunedin, starting at 8.45 o’clock in the morning and continuing until late at night, I appeared to be at all off hand, I can only say I regret it very much,” said Mr. Goosman.
“Regarding the statement that 1 was continually leaning over talking to a secretary, it is usual at deputations to have a departmental officer alongside the Minister to keep him informed as to different matters being put forward. The man with whom I was conferring during this deputation was the Commissioner of Works, Mr. E. R. McKillop.”
