MR. P. COOKE, K.C., APPOINTED TO SUPREME COURT

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 31. Mr. Philip Cooke, K.C., M.C., has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court Bench caused by the retirement through illness of Mr. Justice Cornish, it was announced today by the Minister of Justice, Mr. T. C. Webb.

Mr. Cooke is being sworn in by the Chief Justice, Sir Humphrey O’Leary, this afternoon.

“I am very pleased that Mr. Cooke has been prevailed upon to make the sacrifice and it is indeed a heavy sacrifice that any. man in his position is obliged to make in accepting such an appointment,” said Mr. Webb, “and I am sure it will be welcomed throughout the Dominion.”

Mr. Cooke had served his country well on the field of battle, he had been one of the leaders of the Bar and an outstanding figure in the legal profession for many years and* rendered yeoman service to his profession and through the profession to the community.

He has served in various administrative positions in the legal world, notably as president of the New Zealand Law Society for almost the past four years," said the Minister. “I personally take not a little pride in having succeeded in inducing Mr. Cooke to accept the appointment, which he declined on more than one occasion in the past,” concluded Mr. Webb.
