FOOD PARCELS & CARGO FOR U.K. LEFT BEHIND
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 30.
About 750 food parcels were among the cargo left behind by the liner Rangitoto, which sailed for Britain last night. A fairly large quantity of frozen produce was also left behind. The reason why bags of good parcels had been left behind was that they could not be loaded in time and the ship had to sail on schedule, said Mr. G. I. Tait, Auckland manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, owners of the ship, today. “One of the reasons was congestion on the wharves when the Rangitoto arrived,” he said. “The company had to pull out one of its ships and put the Rangitoto into King’s Wharf, which was quite unsuitable for a ship of that size. It is impossible to work cranes there on account of the ship’s 81ft. beam—we couldn’t get the stuff into the hold.” Mr. Tait said the food parcels left behind amounted to only “a very small proportion” of the parcels loaded into the Rangitoto. The ship had left Auckland with 1760 baws of food parcels.
